Another successful evening at the Gay Men's Health community sexual health testing clinic!

Our community sexual health clinic runs weekly on a Tuesday evening between 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the GMH office at 10 Union Street, Edinburgh (please use the basement entrance, marked 10a ). It's s a drop-in clinic so no appointment is required.

You can have HIV and Syphilis results in just 30 minutes and just a week for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.

GMH Edinburgh Community Sexual Health Clinic

This Tuesday (20th December 2011) is the final Gay Men's Health community clinic of the year. The clinic is running between the hours of 5:30-7:30pm. Operating out of the GMH premises (basement entrance) at 10a Union Street Edinburgh EH1 3LU. This service offers all of the above screening and provides HIV and Syphilis result in just 30 minutes. Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are both self admisistered anal and throat swabs and a urine sample. Pre and post test discussion is also available at this clinic.

Clinics will resume again in the new year on Tuesday 10th of January.

At GMH we were shocked to hear about the abhorrent murder at the weekend of Stuart Walker in Cumnock, Ayrshire. Our thoughts and condolences go to his friends and family.

Strathclyde Police have informed us that they are keeping an open mind with regard to this investigation and all potential motives are being explored. Despite speculation it is not known at this point whether it was a homophobic hate crime or not.

The lived experiences of bisexual men

A Queen Margaret University Undergraduate student is looking for men who identify as bisexual and who are over the age of 18 to part take in interviews about their experiences of bisexual identity. Interviews should last between 45 to 60 minutes and will involve the use of visual methods such a group mapping and photographs.

The lost generation...

A Keele University sociologist is conducting a study looking into the lives of Gay Men over the age of 50 and their experiences of HIV and AIDS in the 80's and 90's. She is currently looking to interview men who are HIV negative and have lost friends and/or partners to the epidemic.

The interview takes 1-2 hours to complete; but your participation would be an invaluable contribution to work within the community.

Bacteria Outbreak

Friday 7th October: Reports are coming in today of an outbreak of shigella flexneri amongst gay and bisexual men. There are confirmed cases in Manchester and London - not so far from us in Scotland. Basically it is a bacteria that is transmitted through rimming, or fingering someones arse and your finger ending up in your mouth. The symptoms are diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps and can last for a week or so. It is treated with antibiotics though, so if in doubt, get it checked out. Prevention by frequent use of soap and water on your arse and hands is recommended, and if you get symptoms get yourself to the sexual health clinic

On the afternoon of Tuesday, 13th September, 2011, a male collapsed and died within No 18 Sauna, Albert Street, Leith Walk, Edinburgh. There are currently no suspicious circumstances however further information relating to this is still needed. If anyone has any knowledge of this, was within the sauna on the day in question or had contact with the man who passed away, please contact us directly. Join the Gay 5k in Glasgow!

Glasgow is to host a gay five-kilometre race, opening the door for top Scottish sportsmen to declare their homosexuality.

The event, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, is aimed at giving young people positive gay role models in sport and may even encourage high-profile stars to “come out”.

The race through Kelvingrove Park on Friday, August 19, is the brainchild of Gay’s Men Health, a Scottish charity. Tom Lusk, the community development manager for the charity, said: “We want to celebrate the sexual diversity that exists in our society and every individual’s right to be unique.”

Mr Lusk, 49, also believed the event could challenge homophobia in Scotland, saying: “What is clear to me and to many who work in the area is that the gay community does not feel welcomed or respected in a sporting environment. I think a change in perception is necessary and there has to be a role model for others to follow.

Mr Lusk emphasised that the Gay 5K was open to all runners, whatever their sexuality. “It is for the gay community, but also, of course, for everyone in society who might shares principles and beliefs in a free and open society.”

The event has been given the go-ahead by Glasgow District Council and Bellahouston Harriers will help in its organisation. (Taken from the Evening Times)

GMH releases position statement on Brian Souter's knighthood

Section 28 (Section 2A in Scotland) was a particularly pernicious piece of legislation that resulted in a situation where young gay men were left uninformed about HIV.

The impact of the legislation resulted in the Christian Institute taking Glasgow City Council to court in May 2000 for funding an HIV prevention and AIDS support charity. This action had a detrimental affect on organisations working to prevent HIV and support those living with it across Scotland, including Gay Menʼs Health.

At this time Brian Souter was funding his “Keep the Clause” campaign and using his personal wealth to attempt to undermine democratically elected MSPs from repealing this act, showing a complete lack of understanding of facts and based upon blatant homophobia.

Bruce Fraser, Chief Executive of Scotlandʼs charity for gay and bisexual men, ʻGay Menʼs Healthʼ said:

“The honours system in the UK should be an example to citizens that a certain way of acting and behaving is recognised and rewarded. Brian Souter actively used his personal power and wealth to try to unduly influence the decision taken by elected representatives.

His reward of a knighthood sends a worrying message to the gay communities that homophobia and actions which have a negative impact upon education and public health is to be rewarded.

Equally worrying is the message that homophobia is an acceptable “different opinion”, when in fact it is detrimental to individuals who suffer violence as a result of it, detrimental to parents and children of gay people, and detrimental to society as a whole.”

Workshop for gay and bisexual men living with HIV

LINK Scotland, a partnership project of Gay Men's Health, Waverley Care and Terrence Higgins Trust is running a workshop for gay and bisexual men living with HIV on "Stress Management and Relaxation" on Saturday 9 July.

Come along and explore how stress affects your body and quality of life and learn basic relaxation techniques to help you reduce your stress levels and improve your health and wellbeing.

The first Gay Men's Clinic at the new centre will be on Wednesday 8th June with slightly revised opening times:

Is a research project that aims to explore gay and bisexual men’s use of the gay scene in Edinburgh.

Are you a gay or bisexual man who regularly who goes out regularly on the scene in Edinburgh?

The Medical Research Council (MRC) would like to hear your thoughts and experiences about what spaces, places and venues are important to you when you are out on the scene.

What is involved?

Taking part in a walking interview, where you would discuss your thoughts about being out on the scene. You would also have the opportunity to take part in a focus group with other men, where you can discuss your thoughts and experiences of being on the scene in Edinburgh

Living with HIV?

If you are HIV+ living in Scotland you can go regularly to specialist HIV clinical services and, if you need them, get Anti Retroviral Therapies. Some people have trouble using HIV clinical services regularly and we want to find out why.

We want to find out these things:

• What you think about HIV services?

• At any point, what have you found difficult about keeping contact with HIV services?

• How would you like HIV services to be for you?

If you have found it difficult to attend HIV clinical services, now or in the past, we invite you to take part in an interview face-to-face or on the telephone. This is an independent and confidential study on behalf of the NHS to find your views of HIV clinical services. There is a payment for everyone who takes part.

Lothian & Borders Police Warning

There has recently been an assault and theft taking place in the Cathedral Lane Toilets in Edinburgh.

It happened on Thursday 7th April 2011 at 1.45pm. The complainer has engaged in a sex act in the toilets with suspect 1 immediately after which the suspect has grabbed him by the throat and threatened to stab him. Suspect 2. then opened the cubicle door and used threatening and abusive language. Both have then made off. The complainer then found that his wallet was missing.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1: 5ft 9- 5ft10, slim build, 18-20, Sharp features, good looking, dark hair possibly brown, white, local accent.

Suspect 2: 5ft 8, 16-18, light clothes, slim,white,local accent, he had a dog on a leash described as being a staffordshire bull terrier .

If you can offer any information on this matter it would be dealt with sensitively and in confidence, and victims/ witnesses can approach me directly in the first place, post to my Gaydar profile or speak to an LGBT Remote Reporting centre, details of which are on our Force webpage .

There are likely to be increased police patrols in the area with a view to identifying the culprits and preventing any further incidents.

Phase 3 of the HIV Comeback Tour campaign launches in Edinburgh

Gay Men's Health in partnership with other voluntary organisations and NHS Lothian have launched a new phase of the award winning HIV prevention campaign in Edinburgh.

The campaign features images of men in bars and saunas and highlights the fact that condoms are still our best protection against HIV transmission.

The campaign also reminds us of some of the facts about HIV e.g. that every week in Lothian a gay or bisexual man is diagnosed with HIV.

In a survey recently published by the Medical Research Council, almost a third of gay and bisexual men with HIV did not know they were infected. The campaign stresses that the only way to know if you have HIV is to have a test. For more information on HIV testing click here.
